Easter Social Media Ideas

Easter Sunday, of course, represents one of the days of the year when most churches see especially large crowds. We have pulled together a list of social media ideas you can use to attract attendance to your Easter worship services.

First things first – let’s be clear on the goal. In this case, the goal is not to use social media to “go viral.” The objective is not to gather lots of “likes” and “shares” – although those things won’t hurt. Our goal here is straightforward – get people sitting in the pews on Easter Sunday. The good news is your church can effectively use social media to help do this. Even better, you do not need to spend a lot of money. Indeed, most of the suggestions we share here are free.

Make Your Website Easy To Use

Before we look at social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram or Twitter, think about your church website. You should create a page on your website where visitors can find everything they need to know about Easter at your church. On this page, list items like:

  • Time(s) of your worship service(s)
  • Any differences between services – example: is one more contemporary?
  • Any special events related to Easter – example: an Easter egg hunt after worship
  • Any special considerations for parking
  • Easy contacts – phone numbers and/or e-mails – in case people have questions

Think of this page as a one-stop shop for everything an individual needs to know about Easter at your church.

Now, make sure this page is easy to find. Give it a web address that is easy to remember, such as YourChurchName.org/Easter

Create Promotional Content

Create visual content that can be posted and shared on social media. If your congregation has visually creative people, enlist their help. We have lots of graphics and templates that can give you a good start. A key here is to be consistent. If your Easter worship has a theme, use that consistently in your posts.

Create two sets of content – one set that the church will post, and one set that your congregation can use to invite friends and family. If you are not sure how to create or post items on social media, we have several quick free tutorials that will teach you.

Encourage Online Discussions

As you post items on social media to promote Easter, be aware of changes in the algorithms that Facebook and other social media platforms use. The algorithms determine what people see when they are on social media. We dive into the details about recent changes to these algorithms and how they impact how posts made by churches are seen. You can read all the details here. The bottom line – posts that encourage authentic discussion and comments are given priority (and seen more). Create posts that will foster good discussion. For example, maybe your church has a special tradition you do every Easter? Make a post about that, and encourage people to share their own special Easter traditions in the comments. It will be fun to learn about how families celebrate Easter, and it also will generate the authentic discussion social media platforms rank higher.

If you need an idea, use our post about interesting Easter traditions from around the world as a discussion starter. Another idea is to record video invitations from your clergy and members of your congregation, and post those. Individuals can reflect on what Easter means for them and their faith journey. Make sure you include a link to your special Easter web page on every post. You want to make it easy for people to learn more about attending your church on Easter Sunday.

Paid Promotions

All the major social media platforms offer opportunities to pay to have posts viewed more broadly. In comparison to other forms of advertising, the costs are quite reasonable. Facebook and Instagram, for example, allow you to “boost” a post for a fee. For relatively little money, you can reach more people in your community.

Using these strategies can help you to increase your attendance on Easter Sunday. The most important thing, of course, is to offer a meaningful worship experience that ministers to your community. If you use any of these ideas, we’d love to hear about your experiences.
