Getting the Image You Want:

A Simple Prompt Writing Guide

Creating beautiful, meaningful images with PCM Imago doesn’t require technical language or AI expertise.

You don’t need complicated keywords.
You don’t need to “speak robot.”

The most powerful prompts are simply clear, descriptive, and grounded in what you want people to see and feel.

This guide will help you write prompts that generate images aligned with your message — and with the sacred dignity of every person made in the image of God.

Start With This Simple Formula

When writing your image description, think in five parts:

Subject + Setting + Mood + Diversity + Style

You don’t have to overthink it. Just move through these naturally.

1. Subject

Who or what is the focus of the image?

Examples:

  • A diverse group of children

  • A Middle Eastern Jesus

  • A congregation gathered for worship

  • A city skyline at sunrise

Be specific. Instead of “church image,” try “a small congregation lighting candles during an evening vigil.”

2. Setting

Where is this happening?

Examples:

  • Outdoors on a hillside

  • In a bright modern sanctuary

  • In an ancient marketplace

  • Around a dinner table

Details create depth and realism.

3. Mood

How should the image feel?

Examples:

  • Hopeful

  • Reflective

  • Joyful

  • Peaceful

  • Bold and prophetic

  • Quiet and contemplative

Emotion matters. It shapes the final result more than most people realize.

4. Diversity

PCM Imago is built for progressive churches committed to inclusion and justice. Our AI engine is trained to create for diversity by default. However, if specific representation matters in your context, name it clearly.

Examples:

  • Diverse ages and ethnicities

  • Women and men equally represented

  • People with visible disabilities

  • LGBTQ+ couples

  • Multigenerational community

The AI can only reflect what you describe.

5. Style

Match your description to the Visual Mode you selected. If you chose Illustration, describe artistic qualities:

  • Watercolor texture

  • Bold graphic shapes

  • Painterly brush strokes

  • Minimalist line art

If you chose Photo — Modern Church, describe realism:

  • Natural lighting

  • Candid photography

  • Contemporary clothing

  • Modern architecture

If you chose Photo — Biblical Scene, describe time and place:

  • Ancient stone buildings

  • Sandstone hills

  • First-century clothing

  • Warm desert light

If you are creating slide backgrounds (ex: for PowerPoint), it is helpful to tell AI how much of the image you want to be available slide text. For example, saying 80% of the image should be free for text will generate an image with more open space for you to add text later. You can also tell AI where you want this free space. A prompt that says to keep the center of the image open and free will generate an image you can use for a PowerPoint title slide.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Too vague
“Church scene” will produce generic results. Add detail.

Too short
One or two words rarely give the AI enough guidance.

No emotional tone
Mood makes a major difference in how the final image feels.

Overloading the prompt
If you try to include five different ideas in one image, the results can become cluttered.

Keep it focused.

Remember the Goal

The goal isn’t technical perfection. The goal is creating visuals that reflect your message — and the sacred worth of every person made in the image of God.

Be clear.
Be specific.
Be intentional.

That’s enough.
