Why Progressive Churches Need Their Own AI Tools

Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming how organizations create content, communicate ideas, and share stories. Churches are not immune to this shift. Many pastors and church communications teams are already experimenting with AI tools to write announcements, generate graphics, or brainstorm sermon ideas.

But most AI tools were not built with churches in mind. And they certainly were not built with the values of progressive Christian communities at their center.

That’s why progressive churches need their own AI tools—tools designed not just for efficiency, but for faithful imagination, inclusive storytelling, and justice-centered ministry.

The Problem with Generic AI Tools

Most AI platforms are built for broad commercial use. Their default assumptions often reflect the dominant imagery and cultural frameworks already present in mainstream media.

When churches use these tools, they frequently encounter challenges:

  • Eurocentric religious imagery that defaults to white, Western depictions of biblical scenes

  • Stock-photo aesthetics that feel disconnected from real congregational life

  • Visual styles that don’t work for worship slides or livestream graphics

  • Representation that lacks diversity or inclusion

For progressive churches that prioritize equity, justice, and belonging, these defaults can feel misaligned with the communities they serve.

In other words, the technology works—but the values embedded in the output often don’t.

Technology Always Reflects Values

Every tool carries assumptions about the world.

When a church chooses media, music, or artwork, those choices communicate theology. The same is true for technology. AI systems are trained on large datasets that reflect cultural norms and historical biases.

That means the tools we use shape the stories we tell.

Progressive churches have long understood that representation matters. The way we depict biblical stories, the communities we show in worship imagery, and the language we use in ministry all shape how people experience belonging.

If that is true for hymn lyrics and sermon illustrations, it is also true for the images generated by AI.

A Different Vision for Church Technology

Imagine AI tools designed specifically for churches that value inclusion and justice.

Instead of generic prompts and random imagery, these tools could help churches create visuals that reflect the diversity of God’s people.

They could prioritize:

  • multicultural representation in biblical imagery

  • women and marginalized voices in leadership

  • inclusive depictions of families and communities

  • worship imagery that reflects real congregations rather than stock-photo models

They could also be designed for the practical realities of church life—volunteers preparing slides on Saturday night, pastors creating sermon graphics, or communications teams producing social media posts for upcoming services.

This is not about replacing human creativity. It is about supporting ministry work with thoughtful tools.

AI Should Serve the Work of Justice

Progressive churches are often deeply engaged in social justice movements: racial equity, LGBTQ+ inclusion, climate justice, and economic fairness.

The images we use in worship and communications should reflect those commitments.

AI can help churches visually express those values by making it easier to create imagery that celebrates diversity and centers communities that have historically been marginalized.

When used thoughtfully, AI becomes a tool that amplifies justice-centered storytelling rather than erasing it.

Human Discernment Still Matters

No technology can replace the wisdom and care of the people who lead faith communities.

AI-generated images are best understood as creative starting points—tools that spark ideas and help churches communicate visually. But they should always be reviewed, interpreted, and used thoughtfully by human leaders.

Church communication has always required discernment. AI simply adds another tool to the process.

The goal is not automation for its own sake. The goal is helping churches communicate hope, belonging, and sacred imagination in a digital world.

A Tool for Sacred Imagination

Throughout history, artists have helped the church imagine the sacred in new ways—through icons, stained glass, murals, and music.

Artificial intelligence is simply the latest medium through which that imagination can take shape.

For progressive churches committed to justice and inclusion, the question is not whether AI will exist. It already does.

The question is what values will guide the way it is used.

If progressive communities want technology that reflects their theology, then they must help shape the tools themselves.

Because the stories we tell—and the images we use to tell them—still matter.

At Progressive Church Media, we believe technology should serve the work of love, justice, and belonging. Tools like PCM Imago are designed to help churches create visuals that reflect the diversity of God’s people and the sacred imagination of progressive faith communities.

The future of church communication will include artificial intelligence.

Our hope is that it will also include the wisdom, compassion, and justice-centered vision that progressive churches bring to the world.
