Honoring Faith and Patriotism

A Progressive Christian’s Guide to Celebrating Nation and Justice

As progressive Christians, we are often caught in the tension between honoring the good of our country and adhering to the higher call of our faith. While the idea of patriotism can be complex and at times challenging, it’s possible to reconcile love for one's nation with a commitment to justice, peace, and the core theological beliefs of Christianity. True patriotism, when viewed through the lens of faith, is not about blind loyalty, but about celebrating the strengths of a nation while holding it accountable to its highest moral ideals.

Patriotism as Love for Country and Community

At its core, patriotism can be understood as a deep love for one’s country and its people. It’s about cherishing the values that make a nation unique and striving to contribute to its well-being. For progressive Christians, this love can be rooted in a theological understanding that sees all of creation as a reflection of God's goodness.

In this light, true patriotism becomes an act of service to one’s community, grounded in the principles of justice, mercy, and compassion. Jesus teaches us to love our neighbors as ourselves (Matthew 22:39), and this love extends not just to individuals but to the collective well-being of society. Thus, patriotism can involve a dedication to the common good, recognizing that a thriving nation is one where all its citizens—especially the marginalized—are treated with dignity and respect.

Holding the Nation to Its Highest Standards

One of the key elements of true patriotism for progressive Christians is the commitment to holding the nation to its highest ideals. The United States, for example, was founded on the ideals of liberty, equality, and justice, but history reveals that these ideals have often been compromised, particularly for marginalized communities. For progressive Christians, it is not enough to celebrate the nation's successes; true patriotism requires us to be vocal in challenging the systemic inequalities that persist in society. For example, celebrating both July 4 and Juneteenth are acts of patriotism.

Jesus himself was a prophetic figure, challenging the status quo and calling for justice. In Matthew 23:23, he rebukes the Pharisees for neglecting justice, mercy, and faithfulness, while being meticulous about matters of ritual. Similarly, progressive Christians are called to speak truth to power, advocating for policies and practices that align with the core values of justice, peace, and equality.

True patriotism, therefore, does not involve blind allegiance to the country but a willingness to engage critically with its shortcomings. By holding the nation accountable to its foundational principles, progressive Christians honor the best of what their country can be, while actively working toward a more just and inclusive society.

Celebrating the Good While Confronting the Bad

Patriotism in the progressive Christian context can also involve a balanced approach—celebrating the nation’s achievements and the progress it has made, while acknowledging the areas where there is still much work to be done. This dual approach reflects the Christian practice of repentance, where we recognize both the good and the areas in need of transformation.

Consider, for instance, how we honor the freedoms our country offers, such as the right to worship freely or the ability to voice dissent in the public sphere. These are foundational blessings that many Christians in other parts of the world do not experience. However, this celebration is not without the understanding that these freedoms have often been enjoyed by some at the expense of others—especially Indigenous peoples, Black Americans, immigrants, and other marginalized groups. A truly patriotic Christian will celebrate the freedom of speech, but also confront the ways that speech can be silenced or used to perpetuate hate. They will honor the progress made in civil rights while recognizing the ongoing fight for justice and equality.

Fostering Unity and Healing

In a world that is increasingly polarized, progressive Christians can offer a model for patriotism that promotes unity and healing. The call of the Gospel is to build bridges, not walls—to love not just our allies, but our enemies (Matthew 5:44). True patriotism, from a Christian perspective, involves working toward reconciliation and healing the divisions within our communities and our nation.

This means fostering dialogue across political, racial, and cultural divides, seeking common ground while holding firm to the values of compassion and justice. By championing policies that promote equity, environmental sustainability, and peace, progressive Christians demonstrate a form of patriotism that serves the collective good of the nation and its people.

Living Out the Kingdom (Kindom) of God Here and Now

Finally, progressive Christians recognize that true patriotism is always secondary to allegiance to God's kindom. Our primary loyalty lies with God’s call to love and serve others, regardless of borders. However, this does not mean disengaging from the political process or failing to work for the common good. Instead, it means that our nation-building efforts must always reflect God’s vision for a just, peaceful, and compassionate world.

The kindom of God, as Jesus described it, is not bound by geography or nationality—it transcends human-made divisions. Yet, Christians are still called to live out this kindom in the here and now. This can be seen in efforts to advance justice, reduce poverty, care for the environment, and advocate for the marginalized. True patriotism, then, is not just about celebrating a nation but about helping it to live up to the values that reflect God’s love for all people.

Progressive Christians can honor both their faith and their patriotism by embracing a vision of love for country that is rooted in justice, mercy, and truth. This means celebrating the good in a nation while also holding it accountable to its highest moral standards. True patriotism is not a passive affection for one’s country, but an active commitment to its betterment—working to ensure that all people, particularly the most vulnerable, are treated with dignity and respect. By embodying these values, progressive Christians not only honor their nation but also stay true to the teachings of Christ, building a more just and compassionate society for all.
