Christian churches around the world foster a sense of community, and greetings at the start of worship services reflect this. Here are some common traditions:

• Passing the Peace: This practice, rooted in the Bible’s message of peace (Romans 15:33), involves a leader saying something like “The peace of Christ be with you” to which the congregation responds “And also with you.” This is often followed by a time for congregants to turn to those around them and share a handshake, smile, or a friendly word, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

• Informal Fellowship Time: Many churches have a designated period before the service where attendees can mingle and greet each other. This can be a casual conversation time with refreshments or a more structured welcome by pastors or designated greeters. This pre-service fellowship allows people to catch up, build relationships, and welcome newcomers.

• Denominational Variations: Denominations have their own liturgical styles reflected in greetings. Catholic churches might have a designated time for parishioners to light candles and say silent prayers, while Protestant churches might have a more contemporary approach with upbeat music and a casual greeting time.

• Modern Adaptations: Recognizing that physical touch may not be comfortable for everyone, some churches are incorporating alternative greetings. This could involve a wave, a nod, or a simple “good morning, brother/sister in Christ.” The focus remains on creating a welcoming and inclusive space for all.
