Every December 1st, people around the world observe World AIDS Day, a time to reflect on the impact of HIV/AIDS, show support for those living with the virus, and remember those who have lost their lives. For Christians, especially those committed to compassion and social justice, World AIDS Day can be a powerful moment to acknowledge past harms, reaffirm the call to love our neighbors, and advocate for those who have been marginalized by this devastating disease.
World AIDS Day was first established in 1988 by the World Health Organization and the United Nations to bring global attention to the AIDS pandemic and to promote education, prevention, and research. It was the first-ever international day dedicated to health awareness, as the HIV/AIDS crisis had reached alarming levels by the late 1980s. While the virus had initially been associated primarily with certain marginalized communities, such as gay men and intravenous drug users, the global spread of HIV showed that anyone could be affected. Since then, World AIDS Day has become an annual opportunity to raise awareness, combat stigma, and foster solidarity with those living with HIV/AIDS.
The Christian church’s response to the AIDS crisis has been a difficult and often painful story. In the early years of the AIDS epidemic, many Christian communities, especially in Western countries, were hesitant—even resistant—to address the crisis. Driven by misconceptions and moral judgments, some churches viewed HIV/AIDS primarily as a punishment for sin rather than a health crisis in need of compassion and intervention. In some cases, this reluctance was coupled with open discrimination against individuals with HIV/AIDS, particularly within the LGBTQ+ community. As a result, the church sometimes became a source of shame and alienation rather than comfort and healing.
But this is not the whole story. Even in those early years, some Christian leaders and communities courageously stood with those affected by the virus. Organizations like Catholic Charities and various ministries in the Episcopal and Methodist churches offered support, shelter, and medical care. They believed that Jesus’ call to care for “the least of these” meant advocating for all people without judgment, even when it was difficult or controversial. These communities became essential voices of compassion and justice within the broader church.
While many Christian denominations and congregations today are more educated about HIV/AIDS and have overcome initial hesitations, there remains an uncomfortable silence in some quarters. Stigma and fear surrounding HIV/AIDS still linger, especially in communities where discussions of sexuality and substance use remain taboo. Many churches have not fully embraced the opportunity to speak openly about the virus, its transmission, or the ongoing impact on the lives of millions. This reluctance sometimes arises from discomfort with these topics, fear of alienating conservative congregants, or simply lack of information.
This hesitation has real consequences. When churches avoid or underplay the importance of HIV/AIDS awareness and support, they may miss the chance to serve as a safe space for people affected by HIV/AIDS, including congregants and their families. They may also neglect opportunities to encourage proactive prevention, advocate for accessible healthcare, or join the fight against social stigma.
For progressive Christians, World AIDS Day is a moment to reflect on this legacy and re-commit to a compassionate, inclusive approach. The teachings of Jesus urge us to care for the sick, marginalized, and oppressed. By embracing education, promoting awareness, and speaking openly about HIV/AIDS, churches can be places of hope and healing. Today, over 38 million people worldwide live with HIV, many in communities where treatment and support are limited. This moment calls for continued advocacy for universal access to healthcare, affordable medications, and support services that meet the physical and mental health needs of those living with the virus.
On World AIDS Day, let us remember those we have lost, stand with those affected, and strive to embody the spirit of radical love that calls us to break down barriers, combat stigma, and promote justice. Let us recognize our calling to be agents of healing and reconciliation in a world that desperately needs both.
