Evergreen Trees and Christmas

Evergreen trees have long captured human imagination because they remain vibrant and green even in the darkest, coldest months of the year. In ancient cultures, evergreens symbolized resilience, continuity, and life’s persistence through hardship. While other plants withered in winter, evergreen branches stood as a quiet reminder that life endured beneath the snow and frost, making them powerful symbols of hope during times of darkness.

Long before Christianity, evergreen boughs were used in winter festivals across Europe. Ancient Egyptians brought palm branches into their homes during the winter solstice to honor the sun god Ra, celebrating the return of longer days. In Roman traditions, evergreens adorned temples and homes during Saturnalia, a festival marking renewal and abundance. Germanic and Nordic peoples also revered evergreen trees, associating them with protection, fertility, and eternal life during Yule celebrations.

As Christianity spread across Europe, existing winter symbols were gradually woven into Christian meaning. The evergreen’s enduring green came to represent eternal life through Christ, while its triangular shape was often interpreted as a symbol of the Holy Trinity. By the Middle Ages, evergreen trees appeared in “Paradise Plays” performed on December 24, representing the Tree of Life in the Garden of Eden, often decorated with apples and wafers to tell the biblical story visually.

The modern Christmas tree tradition emerged in Germany in the 16th century, where families brought decorated evergreens into their homes as part of Christmas celebrations. Candles, later replaced by lights, symbolized Christ as the light of the world. Over time, this practice spread across Europe and to North America, evolving into a beloved centerpiece of Christmas. Today, the evergreen tree continues to embody hope, continuity, and joy—rooted in ancient traditions yet deeply intertwined with the story and spirit of Christmas.
