Lift Every Voice and Sing was first performed in public on February 12, 1900, by 500 school children at the segregated Stanton School in Jacksonville, Florida, as part of a celebration of Lincoln’s Birthday. Its principal, James Weldon Johnson, wrote the words to introduce the honored guest, Booker T. Washington. His brother, J. Rosamond Johnson, set them to music. Johnson later wrote that the schoolchildren kept singing it, carried it to other schools, and grew up to teach it to other children.
