Father's Day is an opportunity to celebrate the diverse expressions of fatherhood in our communities. For progressive Christians, it is a chance to honor the fathers who nurture, protect, and guide their families, as well as the spiritual fathers who provide mentorship and wisdom within the church. We recognize that fatherhood comes in many forms—biological, adoptive, and chosen—and that each contributes to the strength and growth of our families and faith communities. It is also important to remember those who may not have had an ideal father figure, acknowledging the pain of broken relationships while affirming that God’s love can heal and restore.
In celebrating Father’s Day, we also challenge ourselves to reflect on how our faith calls us to care for all fathers, especially those in marginalized communities. We are reminded of the divine image of a loving, just Father who cares for the oppressed and seeks reconciliation. Progressive Christians are called to advocate for policies that support fathers, from equitable parental leave to the end of mass incarceration that disproportionately impacts fathers of color. As we honor fathers today, we are invited to embody the radical love of God that calls us to care for all families, lifting up the dignity of each person as a beloved child of God.
