Making Our Faith Inclusive

Inclusivity has become a central topic in every aspect of our lives. From workplaces to educational institutions, people are demanding a more inclusive environment where everyone feels valued and respected. Inclusive language is an essential component of creating such an environment. One aspect of inclusive language that is gaining increasing attention is the way we refer to God. It is time we embrace the importance of referring to God in both masculine and feminine terms. That’s why we are delighted to produce worship resources for women-led churches, and churches that celebrate all the ways women are active in ministry.

We’ve Limited Our Understanding Of God

For far too long, we have referred to God only in masculine terms. We’ve heard it in religious scriptures, in songs, and in everyday conversations. It is easy to understand why this is the case since God is often portrayed as a father figure in most religious traditions. However, this narrow view of God limits our understanding and appreciation of the divine.

By embracing both masculine and feminine terms for God, we can create a more inclusive and diverse understanding of the divine. It allows us to recognize the full spectrum of God’s characteristics and attributes. Just as a mother’s love is different from a father’s love, referring to God in both masculine and feminine terms helps us to appreciate the different ways in which God’s love and care are expressed.

Drawing The Circle Wide

Furthermore, using inclusive language when referring to God allows everyone, regardless of their gender identity, to feel included in spiritual conversations. It is not just about being politically correct; it is about recognizing the inherent dignity and worth of all people, regardless of their gender identity.

Some might argue that referring to God in both masculine and feminine terms goes against tradition. However, tradition should not be used as an excuse to exclude or marginalize anyone. Instead, tradition should be used as a foundation to build a more inclusive and diverse understanding of the divine.

The use of inclusive language is crucial in creating an environment where everyone feels valued and respected. Referring to God in both masculine and feminine terms is an important step towards creating a more inclusive and diverse understanding of the divine. It allows us to recognize the full spectrum of God’s characteristics and attributes and ensures that everyone feels included in spiritual conversations. Let us embrace inclusivity and celebrate the diversity of the divine.
